Cancer statistics are truly staggering. It is estimated that 1,479,350 men and women (766,130 men and 713,220 women) will be diagnosed with, and, 562,340 men and women will die of cancer of all types in 2009.

The most common types of cancer diagnosis depend on the sex of the patient. Of the 766,000 men who will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in the coming year, the most common types include:

1. Prostate – 192,280
2. Lung – 116,090
3. Colon – 75,590
4. Urinary – 52,810
5. Melanoma – 39,080
6. Lymphoma – 35,990
7. Kidney – 35,430
8. Leukemia – 25,630

Of the 713,000 women who will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in the coming year, the most common types are:

1. Breast – 192,370
2. Lung – 103,350
3. Colon – 71,390
4. Uterine – 42,160
5. Lymphoma – 29,990
6. Melanoma – 29,640
7. Thyroid – 27,200
8. Kidney – 22,330
